About Derek Bell

That I am an artist and love nature, and the earth must be partly due to my heritage.

I inherited a tradition of art appreciation from my mother who in the 1920s spent time in Paris. My grandfather John Bell bought Killin in 1860 and planted many trees on the land. This has made it a landmark of the present, seen from far and wide and known as Killin Wood.

I started painting 30 years ago. Some people are inspired to express themselves in conversation or in writing, others in music or visual arts and I belong to the latter.

What I have to offer is what I do. I cannot say I have not been influenced by experiencing the work of others but I do not copy nor do I try to portray reality. I, like so many others, paint at night when all the daytime stress is over and I feel the world is left to darkness and to me!
