Sheila na Gig

In Medieval Times, the stonemasons took great pride in their work and built some fabulous monasteries and other ecclesiastical buildings. If, as happened on occasion, the builders were not satisfied with their wages or general treatment, they would carve an obscene figurine which they then built into the structure usually at an almost inaccessible situation. This vegeful figurine was known as a Sheila Na Gig and many can still be viewed in their original situations.
